Panmure

Panmure Golf Club was formed in 1845 and moved to its current location in Barry in 1899. Even though slightly inland, this is a traditional links just south of the Carnoustie Championship course.

The Panmure course is relatively short by modern standards at just over 6,300 yards, but there is still plenty of challenge and it can be a difficult option for higher handicappers. The golf course occupies only 115 acres, most of which is rough, whins or trees. There are 83 bunkers, 81 of them being spread between 15 holes and they are generally deep. The greens are mostly quite small which adds challenge for the golfer on their approach shots. The real interest of the golf course is in the middle section where the longest holes await.

Ben Hogan spent two weeks at Panmure in preparation for his only visit to the Open Championship in 1953 at Carnoustie. Hogan had to learn to play with the then smaller British ball and the unforgiving links grasses, which prevented him taking his customary long divot.

His methodical and intensive practice paid off as Hogan won the Open by four strokes, setting a new Carnoustie course record of 68 in his final round. Hogan's favourite hole at Panmure was the sixth and he suggested the hidden pot bunker to the front right of the green. This is still referred to as "Hogan's Bunker".

Panmure has a reputation for being kept in excellent condition with quality greens.
