New Course, St Andrews

The links of the New course sits directly alongside the more famed St Andrews Old course and shares similar features to its older neighbour. The oldest 'new' golf course in the world was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895 and was to accommodate the increasing number of golfers visiting St Andrews.

Using the natural terrain, the golf course has classic undulating links fairways that are more testing than they may initially look as well as challenging greens. Like the Old course there are shared fairways and there is also a large double green at the 3rd and 15th, as well as an out and back layout. However the fairways are tighter, with plenty of gorse, although the bunkers are not quite as severe.

It is clear that for golfing visitors to St Andrews the New sits in the shadow of the Old but it is popular with the locals, who are often said to prefer it. Whether that it is because there is less demand so it is easier to get on who knows? The New course certainly shouldn't be dismissed because it's not the Old course. It is a classic Scottish links golf experience in its own right, in an iconic setting.
