Scotscraig

Scotscraig is an interesting mix of links and heathland golf. The course is close to the sea but feels more like you are playing inland, particularly amongst the tree lined holes. The large expanses of heather and gorse are ready to capture any ball that is slightly wayward.

There are large rolling greens and well positioned bunkers. The course is of average length but as with so many of the older Scottish golf courses how you place each shot is more important than long distance hitting.

Scotscraig Golf Club was founded in 1817 but went into abeyance in 1835 when the original links were ploughed up. A new course was finally opened in 1888 and not long after Tom Morris was asked for guidance on extending the golf course to 18 holes. In 1923 James Braid assisted in a re-design and the course remains largely unchanged from this time.

From 1984 to 2010 Scotscraig was a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship when played at St Andrews.

The course signature hole is the Par 4 4th. The hole is less than 400 yards but the fairway is protected by large revetted bunkers on the left and heather on the right, so a well positioned shot is essential to be able to attack the small plateau green.

For an interesting and good value selection of enjoyable yet testing courses, Scotscraig have combined with Crail, Ladybank and Lundin Golf Clubs to offer reduced fee passes for some or all 4 courses. Each is quite different to the other and all are within a 40 minute drive of St Andrews. Links with History has all the booking information required.
