Carnoustie, Burnside

The Burnside has many of the qualities of the Carnoustie Championship course but less of the length. It has been used as an Open qualifying course when the Open Championship is held at Carnoustie.

The Burnside is often overshadowed by the neighbouring Championship course but has plenty of character of its own. The par 3 short holes, particularly the 5th and 14th can provide a considerable challenge. Fairways are tight and challenging and heather and gorse increase the difficulty as do the many pot bunkers. The famous Barry Burn also meanders through part of the course.

The Burnside golf course presents a strong finish. The 17th is a particularly hard par 4 and many a score has been ruined by the out of bounds fence at the 18th.

In 1953 Ben Hogan qualified for the Open Championship on the Championship course with a 70 on the Burnside.

All three courses at Carnoustie, including the recently re-modelled Buddon course, present a strong golfing challenge. Combination tickets for playing two, or all three, Carnoustie courses are available.
