Monifieth, Medal

The Medal course at Monifieth is one of two golf courses managed by a local Trust. In essence these are public links which are home to four golf clubs which share the courses.

The earliest reference to golf in this location is 1639. The first proper golf course, of 9 holes, was laid out in 1845 and was played over by the members of Panmure Golf Club. The Monifieth Golf Club was established in 1858 and the golf course was extended to 18 holes in 1880. Panmure Golf Club moved to their current location in 1899.

The Monifieth Medal course is a links course with parkland features, not particularly common in Scotland. The fairways can be undulating but many are tree-lined. The golfer has to contend with their fair share of hazards throughout the 18 holes, including the nearby railway on the opening holes. The fairways tend to be narrow with penal heavy rough, and deep revetted bunkers will test any standard of golfer. Thinking about careful shot placement is important. The greens are large, fast and true.

The 6th is the course signature hole, a par 4 where golfers have to carry across a winding burn, often in to the wind.

The Medal course has featured as a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship when held at nearby Carnoustie.
