Lochgreen

Like the parkland Belleisle course, Lochgreen is a municipal course run by South Ayrshire Council. The golf course is one of three such links starting close to the centre of Troon, and runs parallel at some points to the Portland course at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Lochgreen has had its moment of fame as it is where in 1962 Jack Nicklaus qualified for his first Open Championship appearance at Royal Troon.

Lochgreen is a testing par 74 layout with five par 5s and a total length of just under 6,800 yards. There are a few holes just after the turn which feel more parkland than links but otherwise it shows classic links features.

Do not expect the manicured finishes of pricier golf courses but if you want to experience a challenging Ayrshire links at a significantly lower cost than many of its more famous neighbours then Lochgreen is worth consideration.
