Dundonald

The Dundonald golf course comes with a high pedigree as it was designed by Kyle Phillips, the man behind the renowned Kingsbarns Links, south of St Andrews.

A traditional links course, Dundonald makes good use of the natural terrain. Parts of a previous golf course that fell into disrepair have been used, including some of the bunkers. Inspired by the nearby and more established links of the Scottish west coast, such as Royal Troon and Prestwick, Kyle Phillips stated his intent was “to create a championship Ayrshire links that felt and played as though it was an old, rediscovered course.”

The 7,000 plus yard course has played host to a number of professional and amateur tournaments, including the 2015 Ladies Scottish Open and pre-qualifying for the European Tour and the Senior British Open. This is true Ayrshire links country as the course sits alongside Western Gailes and Kilmarnock Barassie.

The fairways are generous and often run in the valleys between dunes. The holes run in varying directions so the wind impacts the shot in different ways from hole to hole. Dundonald is a demanding test but a choice of tee positions make it approachable to a range of golfing abilities. There are views from all around the golf course across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran.

The course is one of the few championship links in this area that offers extensive visitors times at weekends. There is also a large and well presented 330 metre long practice area.

Originally planned as Southern Gailes the course was renamed Dundonald Links after its purchase by the Loch Lomond Golf Club in 2003. There had been a previous golf course named Dundonald on the same site in the early 1900s. It was converted to military use as Dundonald Camp in World War II and the site was used to rehearse the D-Day landings.
