Castle Stuart is one of the newest courses to be added to Scotland's impressive choice of championship standard courses. The venue opened in July 2009 but bedded in so quickly that it was chosen to host the Scottish Open in summer 2011, an event which returned to the Castle Stuart links for the fourth time in July 2016.
The course is located on the south side of the Moray Firth, between Inverness and Nairn and provides a stunning setting for golf. There has been much careful thought given to the layout, with each hole feeling quite isolated from those around it.
The initial holes run along the edge of the shore ensuring wonderful views across the water north to the Black Isle. The golf course then turns more inland for a few holes, creating loops that introduce variation in the style of holes being played throughout the round. The back nine holes sit higher than the front nine and the spectacular 17th hole sits high on the cliffs.
Large, open bunkers reflect the origins of links golf alongside the more familiar steep revetted bunkers. The course retains many familiar links features such as 'rumples' and contours on the fairways.
The course also offers a high standard of lodge accommodation on-site, exclusively for golfers playing at Castle Stuart.
Like Kingsbarns to the south of St Andrews this is a golf course without members, the experience is all about the visitor. It was described in Golf Digest as "the first great links of the 21st century" – that's worldwide, not just in Scotland.
The North of Scotland around the Inverness and Dornoch area is an extremely strong venue for a golfing trip in its own right. Castle Stuart, Royal Dornoch and the Nairn Championship course present an impressive trio of championship links courses within just over an hour of each other, ably backed up by a supporting cast of classic links such as Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Tain, Golspie and Brora Golf Clubs. This is an area well worth exploring by golfers of all levels and and suited to a wide range of budgets.
