Spey Valley

So many of the courses featured in our itineraries for a golf trip to Scotland are links, or on the coast. Spey Valley is a relatively recent and very welcome addition to quality inland Scottish courses in beautiful settings. Such courses present an enticing contrast to the links.

Spey Valley is a moorland course designed by Dave Thomas, opened in 2006. The course is long and challenging, to championship standard. Until overtaken by the 18th hole at Trump International Links, near Aberdeen, Spey Valley boasted the longest golf hole in Scotland.

The setting is spectacular. The course is alongside the River Spey and ancient pine forests. Not far in the distance, overlooking the golf course, and providing a stunning backdrop, are the Cairngorm Mountains. The 18th hole of the course features two bunkers designed to mirror the undulating corries of the mountains behind.

While most of the course seems quite open and approachable, there are a few doglegs to add challenge to the golfer, often with carefully positioned trees. The classic Scottish hazards of heather and gorse line most fairways.

This is a long walking golf course, largely due to some distance between green and tee on a few holes, but buggies are available here. Spey Valley is close to the main north/south A9 to Inverness so can be played from a local or Inverness base or on a transfer day travelling between the north of Scotland and the courses of the more central regions.
