Fortrose & Rosemarkie links is located on the area known as the 'Black Isle' to the north of Inverness. The course is laid out along a peninsula jutting into the Moray Firth which gives wonderful views across the water to the south, west and east.
Fortrose & Rosemarkie is the 15th oldest recorded course in the world, dating back to 1793 while documentary evidence suggests golf was played on this land as far back as 1702. When James Braid was asked to re-design the 18 hole layout in 1932 his biggest challenge would have been finding space for a full and challenging 18 holes on this narrow pensinsula. It is understandably therefore not a golf course dependent on length, but presents challenge in the small greens, tight fairways, blind shots and strategically placed bunkers. Many holes are further protected by large swathes of gorse.
In 1935 a local newspaper reported "The new 18 hole golf course, laid out by Mr James Braid, is of great variety and necessitates much skill. It's sporting character will, no doubt, attract many visitors to the district".
The direction of play varies throughout the round so the impact of the wind is not constant from hole to hole.
An added bonus may be the sighting of dolphins at play out in the Moray Firth.
