Golspie offers an excellent setting for golf, on the Dornoch Firth at the foot of Ben Bhraggie. The course presents a wide variety of testing holes as the layout is a unique blend of seaside links, heath and parkland golf. It is a par 70 which should be enjoyable to all levels of golfer. There are excellent views all around, both inland and coastal.
Golspie Golf Club was founded in 1889. The course was extended in 1908, and then modified by the legendary Scottish golf architect, James Braid in 1926. Little has changed since Braid's modification although some of the bunkering has been changed to increase the challenge to the golfer.
This is an easy walking course, which is also relatively short at 5,990 yards from the medal tees, but it still presents a variety of shot making tests.
The third, four and fifth holes run alongside the beach, where the wind is most likely to come into play. At the 6th the course moves into a more heathland setting while the final three holes revert to links style golf. The par 3 16th hole is known for its well guarded, two-tier green.
This is a very enjoyable golfing experience, and with its near neighbours of Brora, Dornoch and Tain, presents an excellent area for a varied and interesting, but very Scottish, golf trip.
