Trump International Golf Links, Scotland

The website for the Trump International Golf Links proudly proclaims it to be the "World's Greatest Golf Course". The rest of the golfing world may or may not agree but the course has certainly received considerable acclaim, starting even before it opened in the summer of 2012.

The land chosen was amongst dramatic sand dunes – the same kind of towering dunes that lend such character to the nearby courses of Cruden Bay, Murcar Links and Royal Aberdeen. The golf course, which sits close to the shore line of the North Sea, offers traditional links features including challenging revetted bunkers. There are 18 such bunkers on the 18th hole, which also has the distinction of being the longest par 5 in Scotland.

The Trump Links has ambitions to be a Championship venue, and as such is a challenging experience. There are six tees on each hole so take careful consideration of the conditions, which may include blustery wind, when picking from which you will play for your round.

The golf course was designed by Martin Hawtree and comprises two out and back loops of 9 holes each. Hawtree describes the links as threading "their way engagingly through the dunes, rising here to find views of the sea and coastline, plunging there into secluded valleys, offering a sequence of superlative topographies, landscapes, alternating between spaciousness and enclosure, then panoramic view, and the whole time a rich texture of vegetation and wildlife habitats surrounding the golf holes."
