Southerness is a championship standard links on the Solway coast in Southern Scotland – the golf course offers panoramic views across the Solway Firth south to the Lake District and west to the Galloway Hills.
Designed by Mackenzie Ross the course was opened in 1947. An indication of the test of the course is that from the Medal tees the par is 69 but the standard scratch 73.
This is an easy walking course in a quiet, remote location and the course layout means each hole seems quite separate from the other. It is a fair but challenging golf course with long hitting needed to make par. The two par 5s are not particularly long but even from the yellow tees there are 5 par 4s over 400 yards long.
The course signature hole is the par 4 12th, which is a dogleg from left to right that requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the fairway bunkers. The green is particularly well protected with bunkers to the right, water to the left and the beach just 10 yards behind. As golfers walk from the tee the view ahead is off the Solway Firth and the large sandy bay beyond the green.
