Murcar Championship Links

Murcar Links sits just north of Aberdeen and is a very natural links of championship standard. It curves around dunes and offers classic links challenges of undulating fairways and tricky approaches.

Murcar lies directly north of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club and about half an hour to the south of Cruden Bay but is perhaps less well known than these two courses outside of Scotland - the Murcar Links are just as much a golfing challenge and quality experience as its neighbours. This trio of classic Scottish golfing links has now been joined by Trump International Links, located between Murcar and Cruden Bay. All are shaped by huge sand dunes, tight fairways with many hollows and humps and they each feature excellent greens, but each golf course has its own distinct character.

Murcar offers a number of elevated tees which make the most of the views to the North Sea.

This is a course for the experienced golfer as the links can require almost every shot in the book. There are pot bunkers and punishing rough to add to the challenge of the lumpy fairways, which can bounce the golf ball in interesting directions. As with any course that offers the sea views that Murcar does, the wind can have a major impact on how the course plays.

Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open Champion, has described Murcar as "as fine a links course as you would wish to play." Lawrie gives his name to a recently inaugurated European Tour event being played at Murcar, the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play.

Murcar was opened for play in June 1909 to a design created by Archie Simpson, the Professional at Royal Aberdeen. At that time Murcar became the first private golf club in the North of Scotland to permit play on Sunday.

There were some alterations made in the 1930s by James Braid but the golf course today remains close to the original layout.
