Muirfield

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, was created in 1744 at Leith, near Edinburgh, and moved to its current location at Muirfield in 1891. The golf course was laid out by Old Tom Morris and originally had just 16 holes. The course was extended to 18 holes in 1892, when it hosted the Open Championship. This was also the first Open to be played over 72 holes.

The course has continued to be a renowned golfing venue, and hosts many major amateur and professional championships. To date 11 Amateur Championships and 16 Open Championships have been played over the Muirfield links as well as the Senior Open, the Walker Cup and the Ryder Cup.

In 1923 the golf course was extended under designer Harry S Colt and the current layout of two loops of 9 holes was created – an inner loop and outer loop playing in opposite directions. Golfers therefore face constantly changing wind directions throughout the round.

Muirfield presents a stiff challenge and is consistently rated amongst the top courses in the world. Despite the narrow fairways, often penal rough and treachourous bunkers the course was considered to be one of the fairer tests of links golf on the Open Championship circuit, with fewer quirky bounces or hidden dangers and no blind shots. Ben Crenshaw has said Muirfield is "probably the most straightforward, honest test of golf in the world."

With its prestigious history Muirfield is very strong on tradition and visitors are asked, and expected, to conform to the guidelines of the club. Visitor times are available two mornings per week and can be requested directly through the course website.

It is interesting to note that members of the Club play in two ball matches, either singles or foursomes (alternate shot), but visitors may play in fourballs in the morning. Those playing a second round in the afternoon are requested to play in a two ball format.

In addition to the visitor times available directly from the golf club Muirfield provide a limited number of times to residents of the nearby Greywalls Hotel on some Mondays and Fridays outside of the winter season.
